History

First Baptist Church of Pawtucket was founded over 200 years ago. Our church was organized and recognized on August 27, 1805. Our first pastor was a graduate of Brown University (at that time Rhode Island College). Through the years we have helped to birth other Baptist churches in our area in Valley Falls, Woonsocket, Central Falls, and Pawtucket’s Woodlawn community.

In 1957 our original church property was destroyed in a fire. After much deliberation and many church meetings, the old site at the corner of High and Summer Streets was sold and new property at 91 Cottage Street was bought. Our current colonial style building at the site was dedicated on October 2, 1960. A bronze plaque remains at the corner of High and Summer Streets in a granite post, marking the site where First Baptist Church has its roots long ago.

Since our beginning, we have strived to serve the needs of our members and the community. We provide a place for meetings and social activities and our building is home to various groups, from a childcare center to several churches. We hope you’ll stop by and visit us!
